TRAUMA- GRIEF and LOSS

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

" Therefore we do not lose heart!!

Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen.... is eternal."

I guess when you come through much trauma and hurt in your life, there comes a time when you can't bear any more.

This could be termed denial.

It's where I stand in regard to the devastation in New Zealand.

Tonight I allowed myself to watch the evening news..
Only to hear of a man caught under rubble whose life depended on amputation.

The doctor interviewed described how this man would have died in approximately 15 minutes as his legs were crushed.
Using tools from nearby workmen, his legs were cut off.
He is now recovering in hospital.
Grief..... at the loss of his limbs...

And what of those doctors who performed the rough operation?
Grief...... at the effect of what needed to be done.
Grief...... at the lack of hygienic conditions.
Grief...... there was no other choice!

There are many reasons for grief, and this week in N.Z. some of those reasons will become apparent.

Loss of a loved one.
Loss of a body part.
Loss of health.
Loss of a home.
Loss of income.
Loss of work.
Loss of a city.
It takes a while for reality to hit, and it hasn't yet.

The trauma builds up.
And although people put on a brave face.
No-one knows except themselves, how their heart aches.

This diagram shows the emotional walk through grief and loss.

It's something we all, at some time, walk alone.
No words can mend the pain, only time eventually heals.

How can we help when someone is grieving??
By simply holding a hand and listening...
By just being there.

One thing they don't need to hear is, "get over it," or "time heals."

It's a hard place to be in.
And yet there is good in everthing.

When we mourn, we are comforted.
When we sorrow, we understand anothers..
When we overcome, we grow.

Then He (Jesus) said to them:
“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven."
Luke 21:10
(And then the end will come)...

Looking Back

As I get older I look back on what I may or may not have enjoyed at the time, and see it with different eyes.
Age breeds wisdom, I realise I should have enjoyed those times more.

As a young seventeen year old I entered hospital trained nursing.
It was a huge Sydney hospital and very daunting.
The wards were known as nightingale wards. They were long with many beds.
This was one of the female wards from that time, in the very same hospital.

In this picture are two trainee nurses and one N.S.W. nursing Sister.
When Sister spoke you listened with eyes down and head bowed.
Hands were to be behind your back. (see pic)
I had a hard time with this as I am a laugher.
But disciple was the answer and one dared not, even smile.
The nurses in the photo above had hair showing from their cap.
My Tutor Sister forbid that.
Patients often asked me what colour my hair was.
I was never recognised out in public..

That dreaded cap. I still feel the terror of it.
Starched as stiff as a board, it ruined a young girls dream of looking stylish.
And....you never considered arguing or refusing to wear it.

The class rooms were situated in the basement of the multi-story nurses quarters.
The Tutor Sister was a fully trained registered nurse teacher, and ran the course in military fashion.

I refused to have a photo taken in my uniform. (not compulsary)
This is a deep regret today as nursing has changed so much and those yesteryear days are now history.

Graduation was four years down the track. This was when you received the veil of honour.
Now you were no longer called nurse. Your professional title became Sister.

The Queensland/Victoria veil      (Sister unknown)

Me (17) pictured at rear, with student nurse Shane on days off.
This photo was taken with a little Kodak flash camera.
Relaxing at the side of the nurses quarters.
Tennis courts and hospital are in the background.

Of course nursing has changed somewhat now.
It went from being a certificate course, to a diploma and finally a degree.

I eventually went on to University and attained my B.N. in Australia.
(Three years full time Uni, and One year mentored new grad for first time nurses)
I sat Boards in the USA and equalled the BSN.
Today in Australia we still wear a hospital uniform, but no cap.
R.N.'s here are gradually being called by their first names.
Some of us oldies, are still known as Sister.

AND, I believe the best medicine of all, is laughter.

"A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
                                             Proverbs 17:22

Laughter is a tranquilizer with no side effects.

My Mother Playing Hymns

Spotted at GoTriCities.com: My Wifes Mother
(CLICK ABOVE)

Mum is 93yrs old legally blind, and currently unwell in hospital.

I recorded this on my last visit to see her in N.S.W..
She is a wonderful lady.
After playing the organ and piano for years
she had to give up, due to finger stiffening.
So now she plays her harmonica.
You will see a photo of her with her five children as I pass the camera around.
I am the child with blond hair standing beside her.
I was and still am, a mother's girl.
God Bless you Mum.xx

Ephesians 6:2-3
“Honor your father and mother”—
which is the first commandment with a promise
“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Family Time

My hubby is back in Tennessee visiting his beautiful grandchildren. Lauren, Allyson and Isaac.
They love their Papaw Ray.

I remain in Oz this time and enjoyed mine.
They came to spend a few days with Nan,
and made me feel alive and young again.
Brody and Elyshah dressed in uniform for school.

Then I took time to drive one hour away and spend a couple of days with my elder daughter Femia.
She has a contemporary Queenslander home.
With light coloured walls and roof to protect from the heat.

The front entry welcomes with Christian decor.

Husband David relaxes with a coffee while he contemplates his next business task.

My daughter Femia works on her photography.

I take a stroll out to the swimming pool.
I hoped to spot my grandsons pet water dragon.
But he is hiding.

I walk down the path towards the back of the house.
But see nothing.

I look everywhere before sighting him.

Yes you guessed right...sunbathing near the pool.
Grandson Luke loves reptiles and found this one on the wall at the local shops..

 Luke dressed in school uniform.
If he could take his dragon with him, he would.

                 He's another Steve Irwin.

Life is not perfect yet we should always see the positive,
 and be thankful.
Femia and I spent much time, coming before the Lord and worshiping Him with Praise.
I am so thankful, to have two beautiful Christian daughters who enjoy to praise the Lord with me.

Our TIME Bank

Ecclesiastes 3:1
"There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens."

I found this profounding.
(Author unknow.)

Each of us has a BANK.
Its name is TIME.

Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds.

Every night it writes off, whatever you have failed to invest to good purpose.

It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you.

Each night it burns up the left over.

If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back.

There is no drawing against the “tomorrow”.

You must live in the present of today’s deposits.

Invest it to get the utmost in health, happiness, and success!

The clock is running.......... Make the most of today.

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade.

To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a pre-mature baby.

To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train.

To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident.

To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.

And Praise God,
there is NO concern about Time,
In Heaven.

Twin Koala Babies

It is not common for a Koala to bear twins.

Yet when a female Koala was hit and killed on the road.

The driver stopped, and took the mother to the local vet.

He didn't realise she was already dead.

Live twins were discovered in her pouch.

So Tiny.

Tube fed they survived.

                              Wondering where their mother was?

                                       They received  mother love.

Learned to drink from a bottle and grew fur.

Little bright eyes looked around at the strange world.

                                      They looked like stuffed toys.

They were introduced to the Gum Tree.

Then they thanked their carer, for giving them life.

Two twins survived because people cared.

Good News

Cyclone News!!
Very encouraging, Praise and thanks be to God.
And thank you all,  for your prayers.

We were not expecting to get the brunt where I live.
At this moment, it is overcast.
But the birds are busy chattering and eating.
Nature seems to know, all is okay.

Further North, there has been destruction and much discomfort.
Yet no reports of lives lost.
One shelter had two thousand people enclosed with no power.
Two babies were born during the cyclone.

People heeded warning instructs and everyone was well prepared.
Thanks be to God, all is well.
God Bless you all .....From Ozzie Land.

CYCLONE WARNING, QUEENSLAND

This is terrible and terrifying for many.
Cyclone Yasi.

We are expecting the largest cyclone EVER to hit Cairns, northern Queensland at midnight tonight.
The Biggest in Generations.
This cyclone is larger than cyclone Tracy that squashed Darwin in 1974.

Monster Category 5.

Winds will be up to 300klm/hour (186 miles).
It is a 400klm (249 miles) in diameter.

The eye is expected to be about 80klms.
Everyone has been advised to evacuate.
Beautiful Cairns is expected to go underwater.

For hundreds of miles down the Queensland coast everyone is heeding the warning.

We should be safe.
However, everyone has been warned to be careful.

"I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go,
and I will bring you back to this land.
I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
Genesis 28:15

For those who belong to the Lord...we are never losers.
He is near us here on earth, or, we are gathered with Him in Heaven.
