Happy Birds

If I could be a bird...I would have chosen to be a kookaburra,... because they enjoy a good laugh.

On Saturday morning I was blessed to capture this family of three, sitting in our huge pine tree out back.
They had just finished a chorus of laughter.
Usually a family of crows claim this tree as their abode. However, the kookaburra is King of the Bush, just as we used to sing in that song at school...

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be

So, when the Kookaburra lays their claim somewhere, the other birds move away.
Being a Pine, and not a eucalyptus (gum) tree though, does make a difference.
Because Kookaburras like to make their homes in a hole, way up in a gum tree.
Those crows almost drove me crazy with their cawing all day long.
Since the kookaburra's have been flying in, I haven't had to put up with the crows.
Instead, every now and then the laughing birds put on a cackling cresendo.

That sound always picks my spirits UP when I am feeling low.
AND... they keep the snakes away.

  2. We had a kookaburra bump into our front window a few weeks ago, it was ok and afterwards just sat for a while on a branch of the jacaranda tree looking at us. Several times since, it has come back to the same branch and just sat there, looking at us again. I do like the idea of their presence scaring the snakes away! I hope you have a lovely week Crystal.

  6. I've never heard or seen your beautiful birds. I think its too cold in the Netherlands for this pretty bird. Here in our land I like the Dutch robin. Its a lovely bird and it overwinters here in our country. It is not migratory and when there is snow, its so nice to see a robin, because its orange-red belly makes me think of the sun. But I also love your beautiful bird :-)

  7. Wish I could see a kookaburra--I learned the song when I was in girl scouts. This morning I was in my office early and heard what sounded like a loud pop outside. Then something fell past my window. I looked out and there was a bird on my outside window sill--what looked like a baby bird. I was later telling one of the women about it and she came up to see. I moved the plant which must have startled it so that it flew or fell. We went outside to see if it was all right but there was no sign of it. I came to the conclusion that maybe it was learning to fly and when I startled it the little fellow suddenly got quite good at this new skill!

    1. I hope it flew off safely. It would be harder to learn to fly then to learn to walk.

  10. Keeping snakes away is a good thing! And I would so enjoy the laughing and joyousness. They would make me grin, which is a good thing.

Look forward to "visiting" you again. Try to be faithful, but too much on my plate presently.

    Bless you and yours.
