The Mountains of East Tennessee

God loves the mountains and speaks about them many times throughout his word.

Moses went up onto the mountain to talk to the Lord.
He received the ten commandments of God, on Mount Sinai.

Jesus went up to the Mount of Olives.
These mountains are spoken of many times in the gospels.

"Go up to the mountains, bring wood and rebuild the temple,
Haggai 1:8

Many nations will come and say,
"Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD                                                                                                                                                                                          And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways                                                                                                                                                        And that we may walk in His paths "
For from Zion will go forth the law,                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Even the word of the LORD unto Jerusalem."  Micah 4:2

Ray and I often drove over the Great Smokies to visit
the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina.
As we drove I pondered                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       with my ever active mind.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       I am curious about the people who have gone before
So, to satisfy my imagination I have found some of those dear folk to share with you.
Look at the clothes and the spinning wheel.
The way the corners of the house joined - and the timber roof.shingles.
This lady looks like she may have eye problems.
A Chestnut tree...  These have all disappeared from the Smokies now.
Working with the copper. I wonder what she is doing??
Sitting in the warm sun.
A River Baptism.
And of course, that old song that I love. DOWN TO THE RIVER TO PRAY
These wonderful folk from bygone days, just like you and me,
worshipped the creator God of earth, mountains, sea, and sky. May we always remember them.

  1. Hi Crystal! These photos remind me of my husband's family who settled in the Ozark Mountains years ago. I came to love them so dearly, and gained much strength and wisdom from them. My husband has character from them and carries on many of their great attributes.
